Bangkok Dangerous (well, not really...)

Well, we're back from Thailand and it was a blast if I do say so myself...and I just polled Keith and Sophie and Matt and they agree...so it's settled, it was a BLAST! We spent 2.5 days in Bangkok (and beyond...more about that in the next blog) and I think it's safe to say that we didn't waste one single second. It was pretty much go-go-go from the moment we left (at 5:15 a.m. no less) to the time we came back to Singapore. At the advice of a friend, I hired a driver/tour guide to show us around for the weekend and WOW was she worth it! We saw everything we wanted to see and more, not to mention she carried our shopping bags, kept our thirst quenced with a constant flow of bottled waters, did all of our bartering for us and gave us cold towels when we were hot. The first day's schedule included stops at the Grand Palace, Wat Po (the site of the Reclining Buddha), the old Parliament building (with artifacts dating all the way back to 2007...haha), Chatachuk weekend market and a Muay Thai fight. Needless to say, we were exhausted by the day's end, but all of the stops made the tiredness well worth it! :) Because I've written about all of these places in a past blog, I will just redirect you here if you're interested in refreshing your memory! So now I present you with pictures from day 1 of our Bangkok adventure!

Here we are at the Grand Palace. Don't we look grand???

Yes, I know, my husband is gooooooood lookin'!

Here we are in front of Wat Phra Kaeo, the Emerald Buddha Temple. The Emerald Buddha is a big deal here...in fact, the whole Grand Palace is centered around it!

Here it is! The Emerald Buddha. We couldn't get a great picture of it b/c cameras are not allowed inside the temple. We managed to get a decent shot from outside on the steps!

Sophie and I were getting really sick of taking pictures, but the guys couldn't get enough ;)

Soldiers marching through the palace.

After the Grand Palace, it was time for lunch! Since Keith and Sophie were treated to two meals of noodles, rice and dumplings the day before, the obvious thing to do was eat ANOTHER meal of noodles and rice :)

With satisfied stomachs we made our way over to Wat Po... and guess what we saw there?! ....more Buddhas of course!!

The famous Reclining Buddha!

Next up was a surprise visit to the old Parliament building. It's been turned into a museum and the inside was beautiful though we have no pictures to prove it because they didn't allow cameras :(

All of the temples in Bangkok require pants and covered shoulders...but the Parliament made us step it up even more...women are required to wear long skirts. Thankfully, our driver, Rat, had them all ready for us. We thanked her with a traditional Thai bow :)

Next up was a trip to Chatachuk weekend Market for some good shopping!

When the shopping was over we made our way to our hotel to freshen up for dinner and a fight...

The main event! It didn't start until past 11, but somehow we managed to stay awake long enough to see the whole thing...probably because red took out blue in round 3! You can watch it at the end of this post :)

The red fighter won!

And finally, our first day in Bangkok ended with a Tuk-Tuk ride...or really, I should say a Tuk-Tuk race. Most of the guide books say that a tuk-tuk ride is a "must do" while in Thailand, and while that is true, I think I'll be quite content to never ride in one again! Our drivers were racing and popping wheelies and we were pretty much scared for our lives! Thankfully, we all made it back to our hotel in one piece and settled in for a good night's rest for day # 2...
Before the life threatening ride!

The final round of the main event at the fight.
